Science

INTENT

We aim for children to be encouraged to be naturally curious about their surroundings and to experiment and explore their world. We want to encourage respect for living organisms and the physical environment and create opportunities for pupils to ask questions for example about how living things rely on and contribute to their environment. We recognise the importance of science in every aspect of daily life. We give the teaching and learning of science the prominence it requires: increasing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the world, developing their scientific skills and encouraging the critical evaluation of evidence and an openness to the fact that science does not hold all of the answers.

IMPLEMENTATION

There is a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum where teaching and learning shows progression from early years (Understanding of the World) through key stages one and two, within all of the strands of science. Children learn key scientific language and its meaning. During each unit they will use a range of resources to develop their knowledge and understanding that is integral to their learning and develop their understanding of working scientifically. Practical investigations form a key part of their experience both in the classroom and outside of the classroom.

Opportunities are made by teachers to reflect on previous learning as new learning builds on prior knowledge. Cross curricular links will be made wherever possible and scientific skills and knowledge applied to other areas of learning.

IMPACT

Most children will achieve age related expectations in Science at the end of their cohort year. They will retain knowledge that is pertinent to Science with a real life context. Children will be able to question ideas and reflect on knowledge. During practical work they will work collaboratively and they will be able to explain processes and reason scientifically.
